What Is May Day? The Real Meaning Behind May 1st Explained
A lot of people stop what they’re doing every May 1. There are different groups that march or dance around a maypole. But what is May Day, and why does it mean different things to different people? History tells us the answer. It starts with spring events in ancient times and ends with one of the most important times in the history of work today.
The Ancient Roots: Spring, Fire & Fertility
On May Day, people didn’t have jobs or trade unions. Instead, they just celebrated how nature grows back. Before, May 1 was the Celtic cross-quarter day. Therefore, it was the midpoint of the winter and spring solstices. The date was halfway between the summer solstice and the spring equinox.
The best-known ancient celebration was Beltane, a festival celebrated by the Celts. Bealtaine is the term used for an Irish celebration that has been celebrated on May Day for many centuries. Traditionally, this period marked the movement of cows to their summer pastures. People believed that sacred flames, smoke, and ash would protect them from harm.
During medieval times, the Gaelic community celebrated the festival of Beltane, which means “Day of Fire.” During the night, people would gather around bonfires and dance around them. Families would bring in May by collecting flowers and green branches. Children would tie ribbons in various colors around the maypole while dancing around it. Each town would also pick a king and queen for May.
The Romans also enjoyed the season with a holiday called Floralia, which was named after Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers. It took place from April 27 to May 3 during the Roman Republic. There were games, shows, and a sacrifice to Flora.

The Labor Revolution: Workers Rise on May 1st
People in the United States fought and killed each other to make the second, and maybe more well-known, form of May Day.
Based on the International Labour Organization, a lot of workers in the US went on strike on May 1, 1886, to demand that they be able to work only eight hours a day. Most workshops and mills had 10- to 16-hour shifts at the time.
From 1884 to May 1, 1886, a group of workers across the country worked to make the workday eight hours. There were strikes in cities all over North America. It was one of the worst times in the history of worker unrest.
There was a terrible turning point in the movement in Chicago that changed everything. A bomb went off at a quiet labor rally and killed several people. Both police cops and protesters were killed when the police opened fire. The Haymarket Affair is what people call this event. And from then on, May 1 became a worldwide day of unity and worker rights.
Many communist groups and trade unions around the world joined together to make May 1 official as May Day in 1889 to remember the Haymarket Affair. May Day is a time to honor workers.
How May Day Is Observed Around the World Today
The nations such as India, South Africa, China, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece have May Day celebrations during which the citizens march, protest, and discuss issues pertaining to laborers and their needs.
International Labour Day is observed around the world to acknowledge the efforts of the laborers and the struggle they undertake to ensure protection, better wages, and recognition. Next year, 2026, on September 22, this day will focus on climate change and occupational safety.
It looks very different where you are today, even though it’s May Day. Maypole dances are still held in town parks all over Europe, and flowers and music are still used in many places to celebrate the holiday. But not everywhere. On May 1, people march and speak out against unfair pay and worker rights.
What’s the Difference Between May Day and Labor Day?
Many people in America are confused about the reason for having Labor Day in September rather than May. Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September in both the United States and Canada. The first Labor Day parade was organized in the United States on September 5, 1882. The celebration dates back to the nineteenth century when it was made an official holiday in 1894. It is not a federal holiday in America unlike May Day.
The politics of the Cold War played an important role in this transition. During the Cold War period, the celebration of May Day by Americans decreased due to its association with various communist and socialist movements throughout the globe.

May Day is very important this year. On May 1, 2026, people from across the nation will demonstrate, assemble, and engage in other actions to call for fair treatment of workers rather than billionaires. In order not to lead their ordinary lives, people will make statements such as, “Do not attend school, work, or shop.”
