Colombo, September 4, 2024 – Sri Lanka and France have agreed to enhance their marine collaboration by establishing a Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in Sri Lanka. They have taken a huge stride towards enhancing collaboration in the maritime industry.

The document was signed by General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and Marie-Noëlle Duris, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the French Embassy in Colombo.

What the Regional Center for Maritime Studies Wants to Do

The Regional Center for Maritime Studies is being planned will be a center of excellence in the Indian Ocean area. They will focus on many things by working with schools and training programs in many areas, such as seafaring safety and security, protecting and saving the marine environment, and picking up trash in the ocean.

The goal of this project is to improve fishing skills in the area and make things better between the two countries.

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to Host New Maritime Centre

The building of this facility fits into a larger scheme to handle maritime issues and promote long-term local development. It will be at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, and the Trincomalee Naval and Maritime Academy will help out as well.

Sri Lanka and France are working together to show how much they want to improve marine studies and keep the Indian Ocean safe and secure. The center is expected to be very important in marine issues in the area, which will be good for both countries and the whole nautical community around the world.
