Unmasking the Tragedy: The Sandra Birchmore Case

During the month of February in the year 2021, Sandra Birchmore, a woman who was 23 years old and from Canton, Massachusetts, unfortunately passed away. At first, it seemed as though she had taken her own life, but additional investigations showed that there was a troubling and sorrowful truth behind her death.

Background

Over the course of nearly a decade, Sandra Birchmore was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse and grooming at the hands of three former Stoughton police officers. These officers violated the regulations of the department and exhibited a pattern of behavior against her that would be considered extremely disturbing. Matthew Farwell, who had previously worked as a detective with the Stoughton Police Department, along with his twin brother William Farwell and Robert Devine were the cops involved. The family of Birchmore initiated a civil case against the City of Stoughton, the Stoughton Police Department, and the three officers. It was determined by a pathologist that the family had hired that her death was the result of a homicide that was caused by strangling.

After conducting a reexamination of the case in June 2022, a well-known former medical examiner came to the conclusion that Sandra Birchmore’s death was a homicide, contrary to the previous ruling that she had committed suicide. There was a relationship between Birchmore and Matthew Farwell. In 2012, Birchmore participated in a youth program known as the “Stoughton Police Explorers Academy,” where Matthew Farwell was a volunteer instructor.
It is stated that Farwell had sexual encounters and other sexual actions with Birchmore prior to the latter’s sixteenth birthday.
Birchmore made the announcement to Farwell that he was the father of the kid during the month of December 2020, when she found out that she was expecting.
It was in January of 2021 when a friend of Birchmore’s revealed to the Stoughton Police Department that Farwell had been having a sexual relationship with her. This was the discovery that proved to be fatal.
The body of Birchmore was discovered at her apartment in Canton a few days later.
It was first determined that she had committed suicide; however, subsequent evidence led to her death being reclassified as a homicide.

The Charges Against

Asserting that Matthew Farwell was responsible for the death of Sandra Birchmore, a grand jury indictment was submitted to the federal court.
According to the indictment, Farwell is accused of committing suicide by strangulation and then staging the scene to make it appear as though Birchmore had committed suicide inside her apartment.
The arrest of Farwell and the accusations that would be brought against him were revealed by United States Attorney Joshua Levy.
At this time, the investigation is still ongoing, and the local police, the Attorney General of the Commonwealth, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are working together to investigate the matter. When Farwell was taken into custody, there were two State Police officers who were attached to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
