Reedsburg Football Players Cited for Harassing Amish Community
REEDSBURG, Wis. — Nine juveniles, including members of the Reedsburg High School football team, have received citations for disorderly conduct from Sauk County authorities. The charges stem from an incident where they allegedly harassed members of the area’s Amish community.
On August 11th, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of young people harassing the rural Reedsburg Amish community. After making contact with a suspect vehicle, nine individuals were issued disorderly conduct citations.
Reedsburg Varsity Football and School’s Integrity Statement
The incident had repercussions beyond legal consequences. Roughly a week and a half later, the first two games of the Reedsburg varsity football season were canceled. Reedsburg Area High School Principal Katie Mathews emphasized the school’s commitment to integrity and learning.
“Above all, we are a teaching and learning institution. While this, without question, is a painful learning experience, we will not compromise our integrity.”
Sheriff Chip Meister confirmed that members of the Reedsburg football team were involved in the incident, although he did not specify how many of the juvenile suspects were part of the team.
School administrators citing student privacy rules have refused to comment on the particular penalties taken against the football players. They have said, meanwhile, that the students engaged may be subject to disciplinary actions including suspension or expulsion.
