President Biden’s Hosts Diwali Celebration At the White House, Honors Indian Americans
In honor of Diwali, President Joe Biden hosted a big party at the White House on October 28, 2024. The party had over 600 well-known Indian Americans, which made it one of the biggest Diwali events ever held at the White House. The party made people aware of the important things that South Asian Americans have done for society in the United States.
As President Biden lit the ritual lamp, the East Room of the White House was filled with the sounds of traditional music and the light of diyas. This was meant to show that light had won over darkness.
Today, Jill and I lit the Diya to symbolize Diwali’s message of seeking the light of wisdom, love, and unity over the darkness of hate and division.

Biden talked about how important Diwali is and what it stands for in his speech. “As president, it was an honor to host the largest Diwali parties ever at the White House.” “It means a lot to me,” Biden said.
He talked about how important South Asian Americans are to his government and named Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy as examples.
President Biden took a moment to praise Vice President Kamala Harris, who couldn’t make it to the event because she had to work on her campaign. “From Kamala to Dr. Murthy to so many of you here today, I’m proud that I kept my commitment to have an administration that looks like America,” Biden said. He thanked Harris for her work and the variety of ideas she brings to the government.
Several famous people sent messages that night, including Sunita Williams, a former NASA scientist who sent a video message from the International Space Station.
An Indian-American youth leader named Shrusti Amula introduced President Biden, giving the party a voice from the younger generation. At the event, people also talked about what Diwali means and how it spreads a message of hope and unity.
When Biden talked about the past of Diwali events at the White House, he talked about the first party he and his wife threw at the Vice President’s house in 2016.
“An Irish Catholic President and Vice President at the time, opened our home for holiday celebrations by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, and more,” he said. Biden said that adding everyone is important and that good can win over evil.

As the party went on, Biden talked about the problems the country and the world are having right now. “We also know today we face an inflection point,” he stated. “One of those rare moments that only come once every several generations, where the decisions we make today will determine the future to come for decades, literally.” He told the people there to remember the ideals that have made America great and to keep working for a better future.
The Diwali celebration at the White House was a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the United States and the contributions of the South Asian American community.
President Biden’s remarks highlighted the importance of unity, inclusivity, and the enduring spirit of Diwali. As the nation moves forward, the celebration serves as a reminder of the power of light and the promise of a brighter future.
