Apple has officially launched the AirPods Pro (3rd generation), delivering a significant overhaul that moves the premium earbuds beyond purely audio and noise cancellation into the realm of health and fitness tracking. Unveiled at the September 2025 event alongside the new iPhone lineup, the AirPods Pro 3 retain the $249 price point while offering upgrades that aim to solidify their position at the top of the true wireless market.

New Focus on Health and Biometrics

The headline feature of the AirPods Pro 3 is the integration of built-in heart rate sensing. For the first time, Apple users can accurately track their heart rate during workouts using only the earbuds, eliminating the need for an Apple Watch or other dedicated fitness tracker.

  • Heart Rate Sensor: The earbuds contain a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that uses invisible infrared light to measure light absorption in blood flow.
  • Fitness Integration: This data seamlessly syncs with the iPhone’s Fitness app, allowing users to track over 50 workout types, monitor calories burned, and close their Move ring.
  • Durability: To support active use, the new model boasts an IP57 rating, a major upgrade from the previous generation, making it highly resistant to dust, sweat, and water.

Redesigned Fit and Enhanced Noise Cancellation

Apple re-engineered the physical design of the earbuds for improved comfort and stability. Based on thousands of ear scans, the new shape is intended to sit deeper and more securely in the ear canal.

  • Ergonomic Fit: The external geometry has been subtly tweaked for better stability, especially during movement.
  • Foam-Infused Tips: A new range of foam-infused silicone ear tips (now offered in five sizes, including an XXS option) is included to ensure a better seal and enhanced passive noise isolation.

The combination of the new acoustic architecture and the tighter seal delivers a remarkable boost in performance. Apple claims the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now 2x more effective than the AirPods Pro 2, positioning the earbuds as a serious rival to top over-ear headphones.

Improved Audio and Battery Life

The audio experience has also been refined with a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ, resulting in:

  • Richer Sound: A wider soundstage, deeper bass response, and clearer vocals for a more immersive listening experience, especially when using Personalized Spatial Audio.
  • Extended Battery Life: Battery performance is meaningfully improved. The earbuds now deliver up to eight hours of listening time with ANC enabled on a single charge—a 33% increase over the previous generation.

Real-Time Translation and Future Outlook

Another headline feature is Live Translation. The system works with a connected iPhone running the latest operating system to provide real-time conversation translation directly through the earbuds, initially supporting several major world languages.

While the AirPods Pro 3 represents a substantial upgrade, reports from analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo indicate Apple is already planning an even more advanced version for 2026. This rumored model may feature a more significant hardware leap, potentially including infrared cameras for advanced gesture control and integration with Apple’s spatial computing environment, positioning the current AirPods Pro 3 as the foundation for an evolving, health-aware product line.
