In a groundbreaking decision to tackle the current political uncertainty prevailing in France, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed centrist leader François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister of France. This was after a historic vote by parliament, and France was witnessing a crucial event.

François Bayrou, aged 73, is an old hand in politics and the president’s most significant political ally. He heads the Democratic Movement, MoDem, a major force in French politics for many years. His considerable political experience is considered crucial for attempting to stabilize a severely polarized National Assembly with no party having a majority of deputies.

Bayrou has taken up the position after the deposition of former Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who served France in office for only three months. Barnier’s government fell after a vote of no confidence, quite an unusual and dramatic thing that happens in French politics. The vote came out over opposition to Barnier’s austerity measures, mainly tax rises and spending cuts, which will have to cut France’s budget deficit by a considerable degree.

President Macron has been a half-term sitting president during his second term, and he has suffered considerable hassles in retaining political stability. Parliamentary snap elections held over the summer resulted in a fragmented parliament with the left, the center, and the far-right majorities. This fragmentary parliamentary landscape has made it difficult to form stable government institutions, and the Prime Minister has changed positions multiple times.

Bayrou’s first priority will be to establish a government with a majority in the National Assembly. Macron has already been holding round-table talks with leaders of all the political parties except the extreme left and the extreme right, like France Unbowed (LFI) and the party of Marine Le Pen-National Rally. People think that Bayrou will be able to get center-left groups to join his government or at least come to an agreement so that there isn’t another vote of no confidence.

A recent study showed that 61% of French voters are worried about the current political situation. France’s political environment is therefore still in flux. Macron has nonetheless said he would remain in office until his tenure ends in 2027.

People believe that Bayrou’s appointment is a wise decision taken by the French government to acquire expertise and better security. We still don’t know if Bayrou can handle the complicated political situation that will be needed to reach a deal in the next few months. Everything is on Bayrou as he moves into Hôtel Matignon to live in the Prime Minister’s home. Everyone is waiting to see if he can succeed where so many others have failed.
